All I want for Christmas is...

The greatest sweets ever made.
Zooey Deschanel's coat from 'Yes Man'.
Inception on DVD.
Ridiculously long eyelash extensions.
Underoath's new album.
Self explanitory.
This book to fuel my obsession.
These Christian Louboutin boots to look down on the world from.
Nike high-tops.
Burberry quilted jacket. Much better than Barbour.
Another one of these - I lost my old one.
I don't even think these are in production anymore, but one of these.
Nissan Figaro.
Hattori Hanzo samurai sword.
Another lie detector - broke my old one.
The most incredible ice cream in the world.
A pensieve.
Larry David's attitude to life.
A Harry Potter Cake.

And my ideal man. He should be all of these, rolled into one...

Want to trade lives soon?

I recently received a text from one of the most amazing people I've ever met, with this question as the conclusion. The text was also pretty amazing, it reads as follows:

"I read your blog the other day on the chick flick subject, It made me laugh. In reality probably a lot of girls, and boys - why the hell not, like those films but cover it up. Then I read the quote from (500)Days of Summer, made me think; there are two choices in life: do the things you want without restrictions, or do the things you think you should be doing. I think I have fallen into this trap, but am doing it badly. In reality I would be quite happy being on my own, instead now I'm going to be someone's parent... wtf. Want to trade lives any time soon? ;) Miss you X"
I don't really agree with blogs of this nature as I like pretending I don't care about anything, but it has really had a profound effect on me. Is life really about doing what we want without restrictions, or about doing what we think we should be doing? Unfortunately I have concluded, yes. I actually actively don't do something because I think I should, because it's the 'right thing to do'. Kant always held that the only way we can be moral agents is for us to comply to a doctrine of duty rather than dogmatic religious or social codes of moral conduct. Duty for duty's sake if you will. Then I also pondered over the words of another highly regarded philosopher, Phoebe Buffay, who claimed that there was no such thing as a selfless act. Ironically I believe in both of these conflicting views, and in my mind they aren't actually mutually exclusive. I hate doing things because I HAVE to, but often do because you'd be very mistaken if you were to think living with your grandma was just a lot of delicious food and and a lot of TV. We have Radio 4 and salads, but my grandma is nearly blind and nearly deaf, she is also the person I care about most in this world. A lot of the time I don't want to go to the library to get her audio books, or collect her prescriptions, or do the ironing when her back is bad, but I do it because it's my duty. I am obviously also duty bound to eat the delicious food she buys me from M&S to thank me, and I can assure you this has absolutely NOTHING to with what a dutiful granddaughter I am.

This is my grandma, Deborah Brewer. She's a wkd champ.
Anyway my point is, on the whole, I'm a massively selfish being and would definitely bracket myself in the 'live how you want with no restrictions' category, whereas this friend is about to do the most amazing thing but believes they are in the 'do what you think you should be doing' realm. All the facts here are pretty depressing ones, 1. that this person is unhappy with their decision, 2. that I am living my life like this, and 3. that they'd be envious of this. It's easy to think that being able to do what you want is a whole lot of fun, but next year, around the time of my graduation, I will have a 2:2 in a degree I never wanted to read in the first place, and this person will have a child. I know this person too well to know that they'll let being a parent keep them in that bracket forever - they will be an absolutely amazing parent, and while that child will shape their future, it won't be their future. I can honestly say that I believe that my pesky 2:2 in 'combined honours' will be more of a burden than a child will be for this person. That makes me sound really naive; I know it will be hard work, but I have so much faith in you, it's unreal. I'll be there for nappy changing, night shifts so you can get sleep, babysitting and, of course, maintaining my main role of being an utter embarrassment to us. What fun's having friends you can't live vicariously through, ey?

I love you x

Behind the wheel, I'll be taking no prisoners.

There's one reason why I'm so gutted about having failed my driving test today, and it's not actually the driving, it's what the driving would have given me the opportunity to have...

RETRIBUTION FOR 20 YEARS OF WOLF-WHISTLING, HORN-TOOTING, "CORR YOU'RE LOOKING LOVELY TODAY DARLIN'" AND CREEPY MEN, IN THEIR EQUALLY CREEPY VEHICLES, PULLING UP AND ASKING IF I FANCY A RIDE.

NO, I do not find this flattering. NO, I should not just take it as a compliment. NO, you have not made my day by making comments about my 'assets'. Woe betide, gentlemen; the day Ruth Brewer passes her driving test is the day you need to FEAR wearing JLS-style low cut tees, because Chloe Howard and I will be objectifying you, from my Skoda, to hell and back. There will be illegal horn tooting at every male that crosses our path, there will be crawling up next to unsuspecting men and telling them they're looking 'tasty', and there will be a hell of a fucking lot of wolf-whistling. For every time a disgusting chav, in a Peugeot 206, has had  the chutzbah to shout, 'wheyyyyyyy get your tits out love' - vengeance will be ours.

Here's to hoping the DSA keep deeming me unfit for the roads, ey?

Freedom for Weezy is deliciously close.

For my close friends, my 'friends' on Facebook and my followers on Twitter, my obsession with Lil Wayne, and the injustice that is his incarceration, is probably a bit of a joke. Let me rephrase: a massive joke. How can anyone hold such a passion for, and devotion to, a criminal; a criminal who is shorter than me no less, you may ask? First and foremost, I honestly believe he is massively talented, I also genuinely believe that he is a fantastic human being. I feel such a strong affinity with the chap that I seriously considered sending him some comforting words from England during his time in jail. I've had his release date etched into my Filofax and brain for months, and I'd even planned a party to mark his release - although I've had to cancel this so I can attend a friend's 21st bithday, but it is in a limo so feel like this is something Weezy would endorse.  Embarrassingly, someone in my seminar today saw this 'event' in my diary and asked if I was a personal friend. I also hold that there is not a single person on this planet who does not like at least one of his songs. Before you try and say you don't, please consult the ENORMOUS catalogue of all his songs, or appearances on songs - you'll surprise yourself.

Make no mistake, I realise Lil Wayne's possession of drugs and weapons was about as innocent as George Michael ordering a set of 7x5"s in Snappy Snaps, but he held his hands up for his crime, and there's a lot to be said for a man who can take 8 root canals, 3 tooth implants and several replacement implants in one sitting. If nothing else, he's my dental hero and I will rest easy in my bed when I see him walk through those prison gates.

MAXIMUM RESPECT.

X-Factor makes me want to kill myself.

Every time I watch the X-Factor I feel like this. I'm not one of these people who gets on their soapbox, ranting about how it's just a bunch of talentless idiots. Honestly, I do see the appeal, and I do think that some of the people on the show are unbelievably talented. Take Jedward last year - an absolute crime against music that they didn't win. If you think I'm joking then you're obviously lucky enough to have missed out on my 'Jedsession', which culminated in me getting to meet them and not being able to speak. N.b. NEVER meet your heroes. No, my reason for hating X-Factor actually lies in a rather traumatic experience on the show myself. Unfortunately, again, this is no joke.

This is my mum, Philippa Brewer. To this day she still thrives off her trip to the X-Factor.
I took my family along for support, although my dad spent the entire morning moaning about having to be in Manchester at all, let alone having to be in such close proximity to Old Trafford. I queued for about 10 hours, by which point my family had returned to sunny High Wycombe and I was hanging out with a man who was going by the name 'DJ Dave'. Surely you'd just introduce yourself as Dave in polite conversation? Anyway, it came to my audition and I was unbelievably nervous, like nothing you can imagine. First of all, imagine singing in front of a crowd of thousands, second of all, imagine singing in a place that stands for EVERYTHING you hate. Well I started to sing and the lady stopped me 30 seconds in. Oh no, the awkward moment when you realise you're so bad that they cannot bear to sit through your entire audition, I thought. "Sorry, I ent heard that song, you got something else to sing?" Who hasn't heard of Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights?!?!?! Anyway, I proceeded to sing Roberta Flack's Killing me Softly, and I barely had enough time to tell her exactly how much of my pain was being strummed with his fingers before she'd flung me a GOLDEN TICKET. Yes, that's right, my passport to the next round.

My next audition was two days later. Obviously I'd told EVERYONE about my success; I probably made friends with enemies to share, with them, my joy. I didn't know what song I was going to sing for this audition, did I take the risk that these judges would have delved into a world of music beyond the 'popular' one, or did I play it safe and sing the song that gave me my coveted golden ticket? I took the risk. It didn't pay off. The audition was in front of three young producers hardly older than me - at the time I was just 19, and although they let me complete the audition, the chap in the middle, the spokesman, looked left, then right, took a deep breath and said:

"Ruth, we love what you've got and you do have a great voice, but..."
"You're not really commercial enough, there's not really a market for this kind of thing..."
"anymore."
I enjoy that they collectively shattered my dreams and self-esteem - that was a nice touch. Good use of telepathy too. There's not a market for blue eye shadow but they still make that! I turned on my heel and left promptly, vowing never to return to X-Factor, Old Trafford or Manchester again. I have repeatedly broken one of these vows, but for good causes such as; seeing UnderOath, visiting Mel and Labour Party Conference.

So at last, I have admitted why I hate the X-Factor so much. I am bitter and disenchanted and I LOVE IT.

Confessions of a 'Chick Flick' enthusiast.

I recently saw an advert for the new Zach Efron film: The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud. I don't care what anyone says, but I'm a MASSIVE fan of his work - mainly in Rolling Stone magazine, but I'm not too fussed; if he's in it, I'm all over it. Anyway, long story short, no one would see it with me at the cinema, and that was one film I was not prepared to see alone, so I watched it online, nice and legally. I don't know about anyone else, but unless a film is truly horrendous, I will always want to see it having seen a trailer for it. Those crafty advert makers could sell Iceland food to Heston Blumenthal. Well this film looked cracking in the trailer, a real tear jerker, although I hasten to add, I have NEVER cried watching a film. To put it bluntly: it was a complete mess. I mean, Zach Efron has sex with a ghost in it. Yet I still really enjoyed it, would probably tell everyone it was 'well good' and inevitably add it to my ever-expanding DVD collection upon its release to DVD and BluRay. This brings me to confront my problem: THE CULT OF THE 'CHICK FLICK'.

If anyone ever asked me what my favourite films were, I'd probably name some Kubrick, Hitchcock and Tarantino in the list, as well as Jean Luc Godard's 'Breathless', and 'Citizen Kane' - you know, every single cliché of a 'good film'. Genuinely, these are some of my favourite films, yet the majority of my DVD collection, and indeed the majority of the films I watch on a regular basis are, to my shame, 'romcoms' and 'chick flicks'. Everyone has time for 'Mean Girls' or 'Never Been Kissed', undeniably, these are some of the 'greats' of the genre, but by and large the films this industry produces are atrocious. Why my fixation with them? I suppose the hopelessly good looking cast helps
, and the idea that no matter how bad life gets some handsome rogue, with lots of money, is going to come along and, errr, rock your world. I like to think I'm a realist, ok I'm delusional about some things - like the existence of Hogwarts, but even knowing that these tales, extolling the virtues of love and marriage, are economical with the truth doesn't stop me from lapping them up. I'm so taken in by this cult that one of my favourite hobbies, and I'm not sure why I'm admitting this seeing as all my friends think it's unbelievably hilarious, is searching for clips, stills and sequences of sad films, set to equally sad songs on YouTube. Yes, people make these. No, I haven't made any of my own, and if I had I'd never tell. My absolute favourite is 'The Notebook' set to 'Hero' by Enrique Iglesias - go check it out and see what the hype is about. Another equally sad fact about me, pertaining to the subject of 'chick flicks', is that I have a section of my memory reserved for some of the more 'romantic' quotes from my favourite films.

Here are some of my faves...

'It wasn't over for me, it still isn't over' - The Notebook

'What would you want to be married to me for anyway?' 'So I can kiss you any time I want.' - Sweet Home Alabama

'I tend to return to big events in my life' 'I was a big event.' - Time Traveller's Wife

'I will return. Find you, love you, marry you and live without shame.' - Atonement

And, my personal favourite...

'That thing, that moment, when you kiss someone and everything around becomes hazy and the only thing in focus is you and this person and you realize that that person is the only person that you're supposed to kiss for the rest of your life, and for one moment you get this amazing gift and you want to laugh and you want to cry because you feel so lucky that you found it and so scared that that it will go away all at the same time.' - Never Been Kissed

To conclude, I shall leave you with my Top 10 'Chick Flicks'.

1. Cruel Intentions
2. Never Been Kissed

3. (500) Days of Summer
4. Mean Girls
5. Sweet Home Alabama
6. It's a BoyGirl Thing
7. He's just not that into you.

8. The Sweetest Thing
9. 10 Things I Hate About You

10. Clueless

And just to save myself a little, My REAL Top 10 Films.

1. A Clockwork Orange
2. Kill Bill 2 (yes, I did enjoy Kill Bill 2 more than 1; controversial I know)
3. Kill Bill 1
4. Der Untergang
5. American History X
6. The History Boys
7. Eyes Wide Shut
8. Das Leben der Anderen
9. Inglourious Basterds
10. Psycho

And what about me?
Well I'm firmly rooted in camp cynical. I don't believe in love, and when Summer Finn says in (500) Days of Summer: 'No, I’m not a lesbian. I just don’t feel comfortable being anyone’s girlfriend. I don’t actually feel comfortable being anyone’s anything... I like being on my own. I think relationships are messy and people’s feelings get hurt. Who needs it?' I'm right there with her.

P.s. I don't love you.

Revision

Is majorly SWAG.

Cannot wait to go home and atone for my sins of late in some way. Yet to work that one out. Two exams left but I'd really rather shoot myself in the face that sit them. I'm unable to revise. Bleurgh. But, on a plus note, my diet it going well. I've lost over half a stone now, although I have no idea where from. Maybe my eyelids? I also broke my scales my jumping off my bed on to them which suxxxx. We're going to Red Hot World Buffet on Friday to celebrate the end of exams, which I guess will be weird seeing as I've starved myself of proper food for 3 weeks. Excited though.

Need to get real about this, I'm just not cut out for writing a blog as I forget about it. It's like a really needy pet. Thank goodness my grandma always fed Bramble.

Peace x

New beginnings

I knew I'd never update this. I'm going to start though. Especially over then next two weeks, to report back on my #labourdoorstep fun. I also feel like Jemma isn't able to stalk me enough on Facebook alone, it's all for her really.

I feel horrible and entirely miserable and I want to go home. Not much of a post but I can't think of what else I can say.

Ultimate wetter x
